Starlink terminals are being widely used by Russian forces in Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal reported. AdvertisementThe Journal also reported that a similar black market is also thriving in Sudan, even though the terminals' use is not authorized there. AdvertisementIn early February, Musk pushed back on claims from Ukrainian military intelligence that the terminals were being systematically used by Russian forces in Ukraine. House Democrats have also pressured Musk to take action, saying Russian military use of the tech is "potentially in violation of US sanctions and export controls." Musk has long sought to limit Starlink's military use, stipulating in the technology's terms of service that it is intended for civilians only.

Russia is trying to cut off Ukraine's access to Elon Musk's Starlink satellites, analysts said. AdvertisementRussia is trying to cut off Ukraine's access to Elon Musk's Starlink satellites, according to space warfare analysts. Since the start of the war, Russia has been using jamming systems to try and deny Ukrainian forces access to commercial satellites. Because Starlink satellites are closer to Earth, latency — the delay between a user's action and a response on the network — is shorter. She said Starlink satellites are both "resilient" and "agile," with Starlink operators constantly updating their software to overcome Russian attacks.

Amazon bought three rocket launches from SpaceX for its Project Kuiper internet satellites, the tech giant announced on Friday. The move is a surprise from Amazon, given the company's Kuiper system aims to compete with Elon Musk's Starlink in the satellite broadband market. SpaceX, the most active rocket operator in the world, has been adamant that it will continue launching Starlink competitors on its rockets. The company previously launched a number of other companies' broadband satellites to orbit and signed deals for future launches as well. In Friday's announcement, Amazon said it signed with SpaceX for three Falcon 9 launches in mid-2025.

REUTERS/Joe Skipper/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 16 (Reuters) - Amazon.com (AMZN.O) said on Thursday its two prototype satellites for its planned Kuiper internet network have been operating successfully in orbit, with the project on track to start launching operational satellites by mid-2024. The Kuiper internet network is set to compete against billionaire Elon Musk's Starlink, the world's largest satellite operator, to offer broadband internet service globally to consumers, companies and governments. Amazon said it used the prototype satellites for brief two-way video calls, streaming a high-definition movie on Prime Video and ordering items off Amazon's website. Badyal declined to say how many satellites Amazon would launch per rocket. The Boeing-Lockheed joint venture United Launch Alliance is set to loft the first several batches of Kuiper satellites aboard its Atlas 5 and the company's upcoming Vulcan rocket.

A Ukrainian official told The New York Times that Starlink satellites are vital to their communication systems. His fears stem from several months of back-and-forth with Musk about the use of Starlink internet in the war against Russia. Mykhailo Fedorov told The Times that Starlink has become the "blood" of Ukrainian communication infrastructure. Starlink satellites, then, are invaluable resources — but also ones that Fedorov told The Times he's worried Ukraine has become overdependent on. In September 2022, Ukrainian officials revealed Musk had blocked Starlink internet access in Russian-occupied Crimea, citing concerns about escalating the conflict.

TOKYO, June 25 (Reuters) - Japan's military is testing Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service with an eye to adopting the technology next fiscal year, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Sunday, citing unnamed government sources. The Ministry of Defense already has access to communication satellites in geostationary orbit, but use of Starlink technology, operated by Musk's SpaceX, would add a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, the Yomiuri said. Japan's Self-Defense Forces have been testing Starlink since March with the system deployed in about 10 locations and in training, the newspaper said. Starlink technology is being deployed by Ukraine on the battlefield, and Russia is attempting to block its use in the region. The U.S. Defense Department said this month it had contracted to provide Starlink services there.
